Tips after dental implants

Tips after dental implants

1. How to care for the implant in the first 14 days?

  • Do not bite or chew on the side where the implants are placed (the first post-operative month is critical, but do not bite on the implants during the entire healing period, i.e. 3 - 6 months).
  • Do not test whether the implant is firm.
  • Eat a soft preferably mushy diet for the first 14 postoperative days.
  • Do not brush or floss the implant or its immediate surroundings on the first day. On the other hand, clean the rest of the oral cavity as best as possible. From the second day onwards, however, the implants must be cleaned as recommended by the oral hygienist (interdental brushes with a plastic-coated central fibre and a soft brush - ultra soft).
  • If you have removable dentures, it is best not to wear them during the first post-operative month. If it is necessary to wear it for aesthetic reasons, then it must never touch the implants (chewing pressure would be transferred to the implants, which would become loose) - recommended to be adjusted in the office by a dentist or dental technician to avoid complications.
  • When treated and examined by another dentist or dental hygienist - point out that you have an implant, even after a crown or fixed bridge has been fitted.

2. How to prevent infection around the implant?

  • Practice good oral hygiene. On the second day after implantation, start cleaning the site itself, first gently with a very soft toothbrush.
  • During the first post-operative week, except for the first day after surgery, rinse the oral cavity with Curasept or Corsodyle, which is very intensive against the microbes present in the oral cavity. It must not be swallowed!!! Read the instructions! The most common use is : 3 times a day for 1 minute rolling in the mouth.
  • Caution! Do not rinse during the first 24 hours to avoid bleeding from the surgical wound.
  • Antibiotics: not absolutely necessary, but generally recommended. We usually prescribe:
  • a penicillin antibiotic, or if allergic to penicillin, other preparations such as ofloxacins.
  • Nasal drops: recommended for patients who have had an implant placed near the maxillary sinus or for patients who have had a sinus lift. Usually Nasivine spray or Mukoseptonex E 3 times a day for 5 drops.
  • Caution. If the implant has been placed near the maxillary sinus, no snoring for 2 weeks (otherwise there is a risk of infection from the maxillary sinus entering the implant area).

3. What to use for pain and swelling?

  • Apply cold compresses to the face for the first 2 days. (alternate 20 minutes yes, 20 minutes no).
  • Caution! Cooling means only applying a plastic bag filled with ice (e.g. frozen vegetables, cosmetic gel bags).
  • Ask your dentist if you can use over-the-counter preparations from pharmacies such as Aescin, which every pharmacy will recommend against swelling
  • Your dentist will inform you, instruct you and prescribe the necessary medication!
  • If possible use enzyme preparations Wobenzym or Phlogenzym, dosage according to the instructions. In case of complications, contact your pharmacist.
  • If you are lying down it is recommended to put more support under your head.
  • Analgesics may irritate the stomach, use as directed.

4. When postoperative bleeding occurs?

  • Best to bite down with sterile gauze from the first aid kit or an ironed cotton handkerchief.
  • If nosebleeds occur (in maxillary surgery), do not sniff vigorously, but use cold compresses and nasal drops. If the bleeding does not stop after 1 hour, contact your dentist.

5. Smoking

  • Forbidden! In particular, you must not smoke during the first 14 days after surgery. Later on, smoking should be significantly reduced as it does not benefit the implants. Alcohol is also not allowed during the first 14 days.
